K-Line placing its bets on tidal energy

by Port News Editorial Staff

Focusing on renewable energy and the development of new engines that can guarantee a complete reduction in CO2 emissions.

This is the challenge that K Line wants to face and possibly win. This is why the Japanese shipping company has announced that it has entered into a strategic agreement with compatriot Chubu Electric and Irish company Dp Energy, both specializing in the production and distribution of electricity, to co-develop a tidal energy project in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Uisce Tapa project, which is still awaiting approval by the Canadian government, has an estimated electricity generation capacity of 1.7 gigawatt hours per year. The plant will have three underwater turbine generators installed in the Bay of Fundy. The first is expected to start working in 2023, while the other two are due to become operational in 2026.

The tidal energy will be purchased for 15 years from Nova Scotia Power Inc at a cost of 423 dollars per megawatt hour. The project sees the financial involvement of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources to the tune of $24 million.
