Container Trade Statistics data

Global container volumes up

by Port News Editorial Staff

88.7 million TEUs since the beginning of the year, nearly 14 percent more than the total for the same period in 2020.  That’s how many containers have been handled so far in 2021, according to Container Trade Statistics (CTS).  The greatest growth has been recorded along the routes between Asia and North America, amounting to 30%. Trade from Asia to Europe, on the other hand, has increased by just 1%.

Globally, growth in box traffic volumes has averaged 3% per year over the past two years. Freight rates are also on the rise, as the CTS Global Price Index clearly shows, up 14 points in June to 146 overall.
