D’Amico Societa di Navigazione has announced that it intends to use a biofuel blend on its ships to accelerate the decarbonization of shipping, with an immediate effect on the existing tonnage.
The trials, carried out between June 19 and July 6, 2021 on board the Group’s product tanker LR1 M/T Cielo Rotterdam, yielded comforting results.
The biofuel blend would guarantee a 4.3% reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of fuel and a resulting CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator, gCO2/dwt tonne mile) of 3.99, with a 3.5% improvement over using ultra-low sulfur fossil fuels, allowing their ships a top “A” energy rating until 2026,
D’Amico said the biofuel could be used in existing engines to consent immediate emission reductions.
