Maersk has slammed the door in the face of the International Chamber of Shipping, resigning from the Group’s Board and accusing it of not being ambitious enough in combating environmental pollution.
According to the Danish Company, the global shipowners’ association has been too weak in its pursuit of decarbonization goals, failing even to convince members of the International Maritime Organization to adopt the proposed $5 billion Research and Development Fund, which aimed to provide guaranteed levels of funding to accelerate the development of zero-emission ships without requiring governments to use taxpayers’ money.
Maersk has therefore decided to bid farewell to the ICS and turn its attentions to the World Shipping Council, the other industry association that is more representative of the interests of carriers specializing in the transportation of containerized cargo.
Maersk had sat on the ICS board since 2012. However, his presence on the board stemmed from its membership of the Danish Shipowners’ Association.
Replacing the Danish representation on the ICS board is Jacob Meldgaard, CEO of Torm.
