Spot rates down 42 weeks running

The Drewry World Container Composite Index has been falling for 42 weeks running. This week it lost a further 1% compared to the previous week, settling at around 2,127 dollars  per 40-foot container. This is 77% lower than the same week last year, but still 51% higher than pre-pandemic levels

Freight rates on Shanghai-New York and Shanghai-Rotterdam routes both fell by 1% to 3952 and 1674 dollars per 40ft box, respectively.

Similarly, rates on the Los Angeles-Shanghai and Rotterdam – New York trades each fell by 1%, to 1175 and 7050 dollars per FEU, respectively.

Freight rates on Rotterdam-Shanghai, Shanghai-Genoa and Shanghai-Los Angeles routes stayed the same as the previous week, while rates on New York-Rotterdam were down by 4%, to 1269 dollars per FEU.

Drewry expects rates to continue to fall in the coming week.
