Freight rates continue to fall. The Drewry World Container Index, which analyses container freight rates on eight major routes to and from the US, Europe and Asia, dropped 2% in the last week, to $1,997 per 40-foot container.
The index is currently 79% below the previous year’s level at this point in time, and 81% below the $10,377 peak in September 2021. However, it remains 41% higher than average 2019 pre-pandemic rates.
Freight rates between Rotterdam and New York fell by 4% to $6,010 per FEU. Spot rates on Shanghai-New York and Shanghai-Genoa each fell by 3% to $3,125 and $2,655 per FEU respectively.
Similarly, the Shanghai-Rotterdam routes were down 1%, to 1,715 dollars per FEU. The Shanghai-Los Angeles, Los Angeles-Shanghai and New York-Rotterdam routes maintained the same levels as the previous week.
