In 2022, the world’s top 30 ports handled 454 million TEUs, up just under 1% on 2021.
Market analyst, Alphaliner, confirmed this in a report highlighting that the top-performing ports are undoubtedly those in China. Despite restrictions due to Covid, box traffic volumes handled in China’s top 10 ports were up 4.1% to a record 222 million TEUs in 2022.
Alphaliner also reports the good performance of the port of Tanger Med, whose container traffic was up 5.6% year-on-year to 7.6 million TEUs. Dubai’s box traffic is also improving: 13.9 million TEUs in 2022, +1.6% on the previous year.
European ports, on the other hand, are struggling. Rotterdam is Europe’s top port, coming 11th on the list. Its annual turnover was down 5.3% year-on-year to 14.4 million TEUs.
Container volumes handled by the port of Antwerp were also down : -5.5% on 2021, to 13.5 million TEUs.
In South East Asia, the French consultancy firm highlights the positive trend in the port of Manila, whose container traffic turnover increased by 9.1% to 5.47 million TEUs.
