Container shipping rates are continuing to fall. In fact, this week, the Drewry index dropped another 2% to an average of 1685 dollars per FEU.
The average spot freight rate is now 78% below the levels of the same week last year and 84% below the peak reached in September 2021, when rates averaged $10,377 per FEU.
Current rates are getting closer and closer to pre-pandemic ones, which averaged 1420 dollars per FEU.
Rotterdam-New York freight rates fell by 10% on a weekly basis, to $3969 per FEU while Shanghai-New York rates fell by 2%, to 2760 dollars per FEU.
On almost all other routes, rates were down less than 1%. On Shanghai-Genoa and Shanghai-Rotterdam routes , freight rates dropped, respectively, to $2169 and $1530 per forty-foot container. Similarly, Shanghai-Los Angeles and Los Angeles-Shanghai rates fell to $1798 and $1023 per FEU.
New York-Rotterdam rates, which rose by 1% on a weekly basis, to $844 per FEU, were the only ones to go against this trend.
