Hold rescue operation down from 4h to 10 minutes

Livorno port rescues 95% faster

by Port News Editorial Staff

Thanks to the terminal’s new personnel rescue cage the Port Network Authority had provided, a breakbulker hold rescue operation was carried out in just ten minutes.

The person rescued was a Uniport dockworker, requested by MarTerNeri terminal company to start wood pulp vessel unloading operations.

The docker was in the hold when he slipped from one of the paper bales, taking a one-metre fall. Unlike in the past – when it could take up to four hours to get into the hold with harnesses and provide first aid – the rescuers climbed inside the rescue cage, which was hooked to a crane and lowered down immediately into the hold.

The young man, who fortunately suffered only minor injuries, was rescued and stabilized on a stretcher within a few minutes. Once on the quayside he was transferred to the ambulance that, in the meantime, had arrived on the scene.

“We are very glad to hear that the worker is ok and that we made these modern personnel rescue cages available to the port,” said Port Network Authority Senior Safety Executive Cinthia De Luca. “First aid and rescue times have been reduced by 95%. This is an important achievement that benefits the entire port community.”
