by Port News Editorial Staff

Two dead. This is the sad toll of the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon on board the Chinese chemical tanker Sheng You, owned by Shenzhen Haifa Shipping Co, a shipowner with a fleet of 16 oil tankers and product carriers with a total capacity of 128,500 dwt.

For reasons yet to be clarified, the cargo ship caught fire while off the Beibu Gulf in Guangxi Province. The Sheng You, which had set sail from the port of Yangpu on 21st  August, was bound for the port of Qinzhou with a cargo of 6,858 tonnes of diesel fuel.

The fire was put out by the fire service and the remaining 15 crew members were all rescued. Apparently, no oil has spilled into the sea.
