Container volumes handled by the US ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach plummeted in July.
Providing the latest figures on trade trends at the two San Pedro Bay ports were Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka and Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. They said that the slowdown in trade was mainly attributable to the problem of many retailers still having huge stockpiles in their warehouses.
In July, 684,291 TEUs transited along the Port of Los Angeles’ quays. Volumes were down 26.8 % from the record levels of the same period last year and 25% less compared to the same period in 2019.
Imports fell by 25% year-on-year to 364,208 TEUs while exports were up by 6% year-on-year to 110,372 TEUs. Overall, there were 209,710 empty containers, down 39% on 2022.
In the first seven months of the year, the port handled 4,821,670 TEUs, – 24% year-on-year.
Long Beach handled 578,249 TEUs in July ,26.4% less than the same month in 2022. Imports dropped by 27.9%, to 271,086 TEUs while exports fell by 17.6%, to 90,134 TEUs. A total of 217,030 TEUs of empty containers transited along the port’s quays, -27.7% on 2022.
In the first seven months the port handled 4,310,925 TEUs, 25.6% less compared to the same period last year.
