After three years of intense work, the EU-funded LIFE4MEDECA project supporting the designation of the Mediterranean Sea as a Ship Emission Control Area has come to an end. This measure will help reduce SO2 emissions in international maritime transport by 80% compared to current legislation.
Next Wednesday, October 18th, starting at 9.00 a.m., the closing event of the project coordinated by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority, with the participation of partners from European and Mediterranean countries, and additional financial contributions from Italy, France, the Netherlands and Spain, will be held in Livorno, at the Natural History Museum.
Institutional representatives, scientists, technicians, and administrators will be discussing what the project has achieved and its future prospects, which are all the more important in the light of the climate crisis and the decarbonization target.
Taking the results of Life4Medeca as a starting point, the day will focus on exploring the effects that setting up an Emission Control Area (ECA) will have on Mediterranean ports. This will include the expected environmental benefits, and what will be needed for shipping to cope with the IMO’s and the European Commission’s new, more stringent requirements for controlling pollutant emissions into the atmosphere.
