Thirty major companies have agreed to increase production of renewable hydrogen-derived fuel by 2030 to help shipping meet the climate targets set by the International Maritime Organization.
A number of businesses, including shipping companies, ship engine designers and bunkering suppliers have committed themselves to promoting the demand for alternative fuels by investing in the construction of state-of-the-art vessels and new fuel supply infrastructure.
Energy producers Orsted, ET Fuels and First Ammonia, among others, have pledged to supply at least 5.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030, while promising to up production to 11 million tonnes per year.
Maersk, MOL and X-Press Feeders are among the carriers supporting the initiative.
Cargo owners are also adhering. They have committed themselves to using only shipping services powered by zero-emission fuels by 2040
IMO’s target is to have 5% of the fuel used on ships be renewable by 2030.
