The Maersk Gibraltar, a containership, narrowly missed being hit by a missile last Wednesday while crsossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait with its bow heading north towards the Red Sea.
The ship was sailing from Salalah, Oman, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the time of the incident. The 10,000 TEU boxship is the seventh vessel to be attacked since the Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi movement began threatening shipping in mid-November.
For weeks, the Houthis have been targeting vessels, suspected of having ties with Israel, in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The Maersk ship is owned by Greater China Intermodal Investments and operated by Seaspan Ship Management. There are no apparent ownership links with Israel. The vessel has no scheduled calls in Israel.
