MAERSK aims to renew its fleet through a massive new order program. Maersk’s CEO Vincent Clerc announced it while presenting the company’s Q2 2024 performance, most of which had already been anticipated last week.
The Danish company’s goal is to renew its vessel fleet at a rate of 160,000 TEUs a year between 2026 and 2030. The plan is to acquire 800,000 TEUs through the delivery of new ships and 500,000 TEUs through time chartering a series of dual-fuel vessels.
Maersk’s top management explains that these orders will not increase the overall capacity offered by the liner because they will be replacing their boxships that have now reached the end of their lifecycle and are ready for scrapping. The operational capacity of their fleet will be maintained at a total of 4.3 million TEUs.
The shipping company closed Q2 with a 3.4% quarter-on-quarter increase in revenue to $12.77 billion. Its EBITDA stood at $2.14 billion (+34% over Q1) while its EBIT totaled 963 million (+444% quarter-on-quarter).
As Mr. Clerc explained, the financial results were driven by the strong performance of its ocean business, where revenues of $8.37 billion were recorded for the period, up by 4.5% on the previous quarter.
Operating costs remained stable compared to the first quarter, at around €6.96 billion.
