Baltimore – explosive charges are to be used to remove the section of the Francis Scott Key bridge that still rests on the Dali containership .
The announcement was given by the Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command. They pointed out that the detonations will be used to split the bridge section into smaller parts to facilitate its removal. This procedure will take a number of days to complete.
The steel truss resting on the Dali is 150 metres long and 18 metres wide. It weighs over 5,000 tonnes.
Meanwhile, the Maryland Department of Transportation has announced its intention to replace the collapsed bridge with a new infrastructure. It is estimated that the project, which will cost around $1.7-1.9 billion, can be completed by the autumn of 2028.
