By the end of 2023 a total of 1.8 million TEUs of containers are due to be manufactured. In other words, practically half of those produced in 2022 and less than a third of the 7 million TEUs in 2021.
In its latest report, Drewry points out that the continuing stagnation of trade and the increasing availability of containers following the easing of congestion problems have led to a 2% drop in the global container fleet, the lowest ever recorded in the last 14 years.
Due to the numerous disposals scheduled by shipping companies (2.8 million twenty-foot containers are expected to be taken off the market) the container fleet will drop below 50 million TEUs this year.
