In its latest report Alphaliner informs us that the containership fleet now has a global stowage capacity of 30 million TEUs
Last year alone, shipping companies added 2.3 million TEUs.
In just eight years, stowage capacity has risen by over 10 million TEUs.
The consultancy firm said they expected this growth to continue at the same pace in the coming year, pointing out that the global order book was now double what it had been eight years ago. There are 7.7 million TEUs on order, compared to 3.7 million TEUs in 2016.
The growth rate has also increased. It had taken the boxship fleet nine years to reach 20 million TEUs.Now we have 30 million TEUs in only eight years.
