CMA CGM is banning plastic waste. It will no longer transport it on its ships from June onwards.
The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, during the One Ocean Summit organized by President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
In a press release the big carrier said that every year 10 million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea; if something is not done now, this amount would triple over the next twenty years, to 29 million tonnes. The marine eco-system would be damaged irreversibly.
According to CMA CGM their decision will prevent this type of waste from being exported to destinations where plastic recycling or recovery is not guaranteed.
