Two new bulkers chartered

CMES boosts Newcastlemax fleet

by Port News Editorial Staff

CHINA Merchants Energy Shipping is leasing two Newcastlemax bulk carriers running on conventional fuel from its sister company China Merchants Commerce Financial Leasing.

The two 21,000 dwt ships will be equipped with scrubbers and are set to be delivered in 2026. Lloyd’s List reports that it will be a five-year charter, which will cost CMES the yuan equivalent of $100.2 million.

Market sources say that the cost of building the two vessels is currently close to $160 million. Charterers are entitled to early delivery, whereas placing a new order now would mean waiting until 2028.

The acquisition of these two new ships follows the 10 other Newcastlemax bulkers ordered earlier this year by CMES from Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding.
