by Port News Editorial Staff

Freight rates continue to fall. The Drewry World Container Index, which analyses container freight rates on eight major routes to and from the US, Europe and Asia, dropped  2% in the last week, to $1,997 per 40-foot container.

The index is currently 79% below the previous year’s level at this point in time, and 81% below the $10,377 peak in September 2021. However, it remains 41% higher than average  2019  pre-pandemic rates.

Freight rates between Rotterdam and New York fell by 4% to $6,010 per FEU. Spot rates on Shanghai-New York and Shanghai-Genoa each fell by 3% to $3,125 and $2,655 per FEU respectively.

Similarly, the Shanghai-Rotterdam routes were down 1%, to 1,715 dollars per FEU. The Shanghai-Los Angeles, Los Angeles-Shanghai and New York-Rotterdam routes maintained the same levels as the previous week.
