Freight rates are continuing to come down. The Drewry World Container Index, which analyses container freight rates on eight major routes to and from the US, Europe and Asia, fell by 3% in the last week, to $1,897 for 40-foot container transportation
The index is 87% below the previous year’s level at this point in time, and 82% below the peak of $10,377 in September 2021. However, the average values remain 34% higher than the pre-pandemic ones in 2019.
Freight rates between Shanghai and New York and Shanghai and Rotterdam both fell respectively by 4% to $2,881 and $1,633 per FEU. On the routes between Shanghai and Los Angeles and Los Angeles and Shanghai, rates both fell by 3%, to $1,959 and $1,101 per FEU, respectively.
Rates between Rotterdam and Shanghai and between New York and Rotterdam both fell by 3% on a weekly basis, to $728 and $1,161 per FEU respectively. Rates along the Shanghai-Genoa trade fell by 2%, to 2540 dollars per FEU, while rates on Rotterdam and New York fell by 1%, to $5,640 per FEU.
