In February, container traffic in ports was up by 1.2% on a monthly basis but was still 3.2% below the throughput in the same period last year, according to the report published by Drewry, based on a sample of more than 235 ports worldwide, representing over 75% of global volumes.
Analysing the findings of the report area-by-area, the Greater China macro-area recorded a month-on-month increase of 4.7%. Among the ports with the highest annual growth rate were Guangzhou (0.24 million TEUs/+15%) and Qingdao (0.22 million TEUs/+13%). Freight volumes handled at Shanghai and Shenzhen were down by 4% and 8.5% year-on-year respectively.
Europe’s Container Port Throughput Index, estimated on the basis of data collected in February 2022, recorded a month-on-month increase of 7.1% , but remained 6.6% below the same month last year.
On the other hand, Oceania’s port traffic is down, with -5% month-on-month and -16% year-on-year. In February, traffic in Sydney fell 26% compared to last year to 0.18m TEUs.
