Spot freight rates in the box shipping market are up again, according to Drewry’s latest report. In the week just ended, rates increased by an average of 3.3% to $1536 per FEU.
However, they are still 77.5% below the same week last year and 43% less than the average of the last ten years. Freight rates are still 8% higher than the pre-pandemic average, when they were around $1420 per FEU.
Taking a closer look at the specific trade lanes, Drewry points out that the rates on the Shanghai-Los Angeles and Shanghai-New York routes were up 10% and 7% respectively compared to last week, to USD 1985 and USD 2906 per FEU.
On the other hand, freight rates on the Rotterdam-New York route (-7%, to $1640 per FEU) and on the Rotterdam-Shanghai and Shanghai-Genoa routes (both -2%, to $ 528 and $ 1902 per FEU respectively) were down. Rates on Los Angeles-Shanghai trade lanes also dropped -1%, to $839 per FEU.
Spot rates on New York-Rotterdam and Shanghai-Rotterdam routes have remained stable.
