Arendal 2 inaugurated

Gothenburg gets a new port terminal

by Port News Editorial Staff

After six years’ work, Gothenburg’s new 144,000 m2 port terminal, costing about 60 million euros, has finally been opened.

The facility, baptized  Arendal 2, represents the greatest upgrading work ever to be carried out in the Swedish port of call in the past four decades.

The terminal is largely already used by the operator Gothenburg Roro Terminal. It was built with material dredged from the Göta River, which was later solidified and then asphalted.

“We have hit two birds with one stone,” said the port’s CEO, Göran Eriksson. “We have both managed to clean the river and dispose of dredging material locally without unnecessary transportation,” he added.

He stated that all this had been done in a safe, environmentally friendly way according to a strict inspection program. “The goal of reusing as much material as possible has been very successful in this project.”
