Hapag-Lloyd has set up a modernization program for its fleet, which will involve a total of 150 of its vessels over the next five years.
The German shipping company is planning to equip at least 86 vessels with new, more efficient propellers, while a new bulbous bow optimized for sailing will be fitted on another 36 ships.
During scheduled dry docking, a coat of resistance-reducing anti-fouling paint will also be applied to all of its vessels on their outer hull below the waterline.
“We aim to be climate neutral by 2045,” said Hapag Lloyd COO Maximilian Rothkopf. “To reach this goal, we have set ourselves an interim target of reducing the CO2 intensity of our own ships by 30% already by 2030.” He said that this was the reason they are investing in upgrading their fleet.
