Protests mounting against failure to update productivity bonuses

Indian port authority strike looming

by Port News Editorial Staff

There is a storm brewing in Indian ports. Port Authority workers have called for a strike in key ports to protest against the failure to bring their salaries up-to-date.

The key issue is the failure to approve the draft regulation on productivity bonuses. The government should have approved the text long ago, but nothing has been done so far.

Arguing openly against the Indian Ports Association (IPA), which they accuse of being sluggish, the workers have announced that they will fold their arms from 17th December, while demonstrations and sit-ins will be organized as early as 5th December.

“It is imperative on the part of the Indian Ports Association (IPA) to forward the settlement to all the port authorities for implementation,” the union said.

There are 12 government-controlled ports in India. However, the most important port remains Mundra, located on the northern shore of the Gulf of Kutch near Mundra. It is India’s top private port.
