The capacity deployed by large shipping lines in intra-European services is increasing. In one year, from February 2023, it has been up 17.8%, by over 170,000 TEUs, to a total of almost 1 million TEUs, according to Alphaliner’s latest report.
Of the four major liner operators, Maersk is the only one that has managed to increase both its market share and capacity in this segment over the past 12 months.
The Danish carrier is now the third largest operator in Europe. Its market share in intra-regional traffic increased in one year from 11.3% (110,000 TEUs) to 11.7% (133,500 TEUs).
The shipping line has put a total of 50 boxships on the service, seven more from February 2023. It has increased its average vessel size by over 100 TEUs, from 2558 to 2672 TEUs.
