A month of events to celebrate ‘Italian Port Days’ (20th September-20th October 2022), the initiative jointly launched by the Port Network Authorities and coordinated by the Italian port association, Assoporti , to bring citizens closer to port life and culture.

How the sea and port interact with the city is the common theme linking a dozen events organized by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority  from Tuesday 21st  September to the 23rd October.

The event will kick off the sixteenth edition of the “Open Port” project, the project designed by the Authority to open up the ports under the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority’s jurisdiction to their urban contexts.

All the shows, meetings and guided tours that have been selected for the local ‘Italian Port Days’ programme, now in its fourth year, revolve around the maritime identity theme, in its various forms.

The first event scheduled in Livorno, on Tuesday 21st September, will be the presentation of journalist Enrico Franceschini’s new work, ‘Un estate a Borgomarina’, while on Friday 23rd September it will be possible to listen to Dimitri Espinoza’s concert for sax solo and ship horns  at the Calata Orlando Terminal, an event conceived by Fabrizio Brandi and Stefania Politi, sponsored by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority and created with the technical set-up of Roberto Napoli’s Promos.

Other important events include the presentation, on 23rd  September, of the second edition of the First Level University Master degree Course ‘Smart and Sustainable Operations in Maritime and Port Logistics.’ The European Researchers’ Night will be held on the  30th September.   This initiative, promoted by the European Commission since 2005, involves thousands of researchers and research institutions all over Europe every year. In Livorno it is being  organized by CNR-IBE.

The event also includes a series of wide-ranging cultural initiatives organized as part of the ‘Port Center Thursdays’ program.  In particular,  a  meeting dedicated to Pisa’s ancient ships and Livorno port’s historic boats (Thursday 20th  October, 5.00 p.m. at the historical boats exhibition warehouse).

Lastly, numerous guided tours of the Port of Livorno are planned, as well as more specific ones, such as those to the Silos Granario (grain silo) on 8th October, at  10.30 and  11.30 a.m., booking required, meeting point Varco Fortezza) and those to the Livorno Lighthouse, in cooperation with the Il Mondo dei Fari Association (Saturday 22nd  October from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. and Sunday 23rd October from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., booking required at https://www.eventbrite.it/e/biglietti-italian-port-day-413158156167).

The events programme will not only concern Livorno, but also Piombino, where on 1st October at 9 p.m., at the Municipality’s  Sala Consiliare, the book: ‘Mare…Luce su Piombino’, by Sandro Leonelli and the Associazione I tre delfini, will be presented.

The Island of Elba will also host ‘Italian Port Days’: on 14th October, in addition to guided tours of the port, institutional meetings and discussions will be organized with the students of the ITCG “G. Cerboni” and the ISIS “R. Foresi” in order to promote and spread the culture of the port among the new generations.
