Maersk orders 20 dual-fuel ships

by Port News Editorial Staff

Maersk has announced that it has signed contracts for 20 new boxships with a 9,000 -17,000 TEU stowage capacity.

All of them will be capable of running on LNG. With these orders, the world’s second largest operator will acquire a total of 300,000 TEUs.

“These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and in line with our commitment to decarbonization, as all the vessels will have dual-fuel engines with the intent to operate them on lower emissions fuel.” said Anda Cristescu, Maersk’s head of the Chartering & Newbuilding division.

The orders include two medium-sized 9,000 TEU ships and six ultra-large 17,000 TEU vessels from the privately-owned Chinese shipyard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

In addition, contracts have been signed for twelve 15,000 TEU newbuildings. Six of which are to be constructed by the Hanwha Ocean shipbuilding company and a further six by the Chinese New Times Shipbuilding Co.
