Man arrested over North Sea collision

by Port News Editorial Staff

Yesterday’s collision in the North Sea between the German-flagged containership Solong and the tanker Stena Immaculate has led to an arrest.

According to reports from the BBC, the captain of the Solong was arrested by the British police on suspicion of ‘gross negligence manslaughter’ after the presumed death of the only seafarer initially reported missing in the accident.

According to initial reconstructions of the accident, the Solong, sailing between Scotland and the port of Rotterdam, allegedly hit the side of the Swedish tanker Stena Immaculate while it was anchored off the English coast, in front of  the port of Hull. The tanker had been assigned to the American transport company Crowley and chartered by the Pentagon to transport 220,000 barrels of military jet fuel.

Humberside Police carried out the arrest.
