Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading eFuel company HIF Global and Japanese oil company Idemitsu Kosan to develop a supply chain for fuels made from chemically combining hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
The proposed supply chain includes the provision of CO2 from Japan, which will serve as a raw material for the fuel production process in the HIF facilities currently being developed in the US, Australia and Chile.
Idemitsu Kosan will conduct research on CO2 capture in Japan, while HIF will assess CO2 demand at its production plants. MOL will be responsible for transporting CO2 from Japan to HIF’s overseas production facilities, as well as transporting synthetic methanol to Japan.
Cesar Norton, President and CEO at HIF Global said that HIF Global was developing a portfolio of eFuel facilities to recycle about 25 million tonnes of CO2 a year, stressing that initiatives like this would “bring us a step closer to fueling our world with renewable energy as we strive towards net emissions now.”
