MITSUI OSK Lines has announced its involvement in a joint project with two shipbuilders to develop a zero-emission gas carrier capable of using ammonia as its main fuel.
The Japanese shipping group and partners Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding aim to deliver the vessel around 2026.
It is a medium-sized, 40,000 cubic metre capacity ship, fitted with an ammonia-fuelled main engine and used for the international carriage of ammonia.
The vessel will be able to call at major ammonia and LPG import and export ports worldwide, which means it can be used on a wide range of routes.
