MITSUI OSK Lines has signed an agreement with two of its national partners, Namura Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, to build a large tanker for transporting ammonia.
In a press release the Japanese carrier said that ammonia was expected to be in high demand in the future as a next-generation clean energy source as it didn’t emit carbon dioxide during combustion. Moreover, the fuel would mainly be required in mixed combustion in coal-fired thermal power plants and for green powering next-generation ships.
It is estimated that Japan will need 3 million tonnes of ammonia by 2030 and 30 million tons by 2050. The tanker will be running on ammonia too.
