Storm off Cabo de São Vicente

MSC boxship loses some of its cargo at sea

by Port News Editorial Staff

While sailing in the Atlantic Ocean an MSC containership lost part of its cargo in a storm off the coast of Portugal

The 4,432 TEU, Portuguese-flagged MSC Houston V was on route from Piraeus to Liverpool when it was hit by a storm a few kilometres away from Cabo de São Vicente.

At least 15 boxes were lost at sea and many other were damaged when the vessel’s container stack partially collapsed.

The 266 m long ship, built in 2010, was forced to make an urgent stop at the port of Vigo in Spain. It is currently berthed at the Termavi Terminal while the competent authorities are devising a plan to reposition or remove the containers safely.
