MSC cuts its Asia-N. Europe capacity

by Port News Editorial Staff

MSC is to transfer all its 19,200 – 24,300 TEU Megamax vessels from the Asia-North Europe trade lane to the Asia-Mediterranean and Asia-West Africa ones, according to Splash247 citing Alphaliner as a source.

Gianluigi Aponte’s group has decided to reduce its shipping capacity from the Far East to Northern Range ports with the aim of countering the downward trend in freight rates which, based on data from the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI, ) currently stand at $1578 /TEU, a 44% drop from the first seven weeks of 2025.

Freight rates along the trade route between Shanghai and West Africa, on the other hand, are more profitable, now averaging $4,000 per TEU.
