by Port News Editorial Staff

MSC is to buy Rimorchiatori Mediterranei for one billion euros. The shipping company has agreed to purchase, through its subsidiary SAS Shipping Agencies Services Sàrl, 65% of the shares from Rimorchiatori Riuniti and the remaining 35% from the Dws Infrastructure Invstment fund

Rimorchiatori Mediterranei is a  leading operator in the Italian harbour towage sector and holds long-term concessions in a number of Italian and Maltese ports.

Last June, the company acquired 100% of Keppel Smit Towage Private Limited and Maju Maritime Pte Ltd, two of the largest harbour towage service providers operating in Singapore and Malaysia, entering the harbour towage service business in Singapore and Malaysia.

“We are pleased to be able to become part of the exciting next phase for  growth and improvement of Rimorchiatori Mediterranei and we look forward to continuing to expand the business, building on the imprtessive work of the families that developed the company over the past 100 years,” said Diego Aponte, President of the MSC Group.

According to Rimorchiatori Riuniti’s Executive President, Gregorio Gavarone, “Rimorchiatori Riuniti, together with DWS, has done an incredible job over the last few years to support Rimorchiatori Mediterranei in becoming one of the  leading towage companies in the world. Thanks to its global network in shipping  and port operations, we think MSC is going to be the ideal investor to accompany Rimorchiatori Mediterranei towards  its next growth chapter.”
