In 2022 Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and ZIM topped the fleet expansion trend among companies operating in container shipping.
In percentage terms, the Israeli carrier even grew at a faster rate than MSC, by 13.3%, while in absolute terms it is still Aponte’s group that dominates this special classification, with a fleet that saw its capacity increase by 560,200 TEUs (+12.2%) last year.
These figures are impressive especially when compared to this year’s figures for the first half of the year, when the world’s merchant fleet was up by just 3.5%.
In Alphaliner’s latest top 10 list, nothing has changed since the beginning of the year. However, each carrier’s fleet development trend is clearly very different.
