Drewry report

Multipurpose shipping rates still rising

by Port News Editorial Staff

Multipurpose vessel freight rates continued to rise in July.

The Drewry Multipurpose Time Charter Index, which takes charters for Multipurpose vessels of various sizes into account, including breakbulk and project cargo, showed a 0.5% increase for the seventh month of the year, with daily rates at $9,212, and estimated a further increase (of 0.4%) for August, to $9,524/day.

According to Drewry, “the seasonal drop in demand for smaller vessels dampened the index, increase  but demand for larger MPs was enough to give an overall increase for July.”

Overall, freight rates have increased by 7.7% since August last year and have gained 5.5 percentage points since January.
