The ports of New York & New Jersey closed their first quarter with a total throughput of 1.79 million TEUs, down 24.9% year-on-year and 0.1% compared to 2019 figures.
The twin ports handled 2.5% less TEUs than the Port of Los Angeles, and 4.1 % more than the Port of Long Beach.
New York & New Jersey’s imports fell by 26.8% year-on-year and 10.1% compared to the average traffic volumes of the last five years.
Executive Director Rick Cotton said that the New York and New Jersey port network is now in a strong position compared to the West Coast ports, adding that volumes were down from last year’s highs in part due to seasonal factors and recession fears.
The two ports overtook Long Beach, becoming the country’s busiest gateway facility in the first quarter.
