The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 843,191 TEUs in August, up 8.6% on the previous month and +24.1% on 2019.
Never before in August had the port handled so many containers. This puts it top of the list nationally in terms of TEUs loaded/unloaded for this month.
Much of the credit for this can be attributed to its acquiring goods initially destined for US west coast ports, which have been put under strain not only by congestion problems but also by the uncertainties associated with the confrontation between unions and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) over the renewal of the current contract, which expired on 1st July.
