Reducing the time needed to recuperate and rescue injured people on board ships and from their holds. This is what prompted the Port Network Authority to present port operators (Tozzi, Ft.lli Bartoli, Cilp, TCO and MarterNeri) with five people safety cages to be used for first aid scenarios.
The safety cages can carry up to four people and a stretcher. They hook up to port terminal cranes to allow rescuers to quickly lower themselves inside the vessel without having to pass through manholes, which are very narrow and do not allow easy access to the hold or tanks with any material that might be needed to provide first aid and stabilize the injured person prior to recovery.
“After drawing up the guidelines for emergency management in ports, a pilot project at national level, the Port Network Authority has made it a priority to supply companies with the appropriate equipment to provide the necessary first aid measures immediately, effectively and efficiently in the event of an emergency,” said Port Network Authority managing director, Matteo Paroli.
“The goal that the Port Network Authority has set itself is to ensure that the focus on port safety is always kept at the highest level, in close cooperation with the port companies, trade unions and trade associations involved.”
The safety cages will be tested over the next few days by the port operators, in the presence of port authority technicians, the fire service, the local heath authority and worker safety representatives.
