In the first six months of 2023, 185 ships were bought and sold, totaling 600,000 TEUs, almost double the amount recorded in the previous six months, according to Alphaliner.
In short, the second-hand market is very vibrant at the moment. This is, above all, thanks to particularly favorable boxship prices which are currently oscillating between half and a quarter of what they were last year.
As of 1st July, second-hand prices have started to stabilize again. According to the consultancy firm, however, they are expected to continue to fall over the next few months due to a market scenario characterized by stifling transport demand, low freight rates on many routes, and a supply surplus generated by the forthcoming delivery of newbuildings.
