Yet another weekly downturn for spot freight rates in the container shipping market. Drewry’s World Container Index was down 1.5% on the previous week to $1369 per 40’ container and remains 60.7% lower than the same period last year. Spot rates are 4% lower than pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
New York – Rotterdam freight rates dropped by 8%, to $677 per FEU. Shanghai-Genoa rates also fell, by 4%, on the previous week, to $1413 per 40’ box.
Freight rates on the Rotterdam – New York, Shanghai – New York, Rotterdam – Shanghai and Shanghai – Rotterdam trade routes fell by 2% each to $1535, $2630, $460 and $1010 per FEU respectively.
By contrast, Los Angeles – Shanghai rates were up by 1%, to $831 per FEU, while Shanghai – Los Angeles freight rates remained stable.
