Drewry’s latest weekly report points out that freight rates in the spot market were up 23% compared to the previous week to $3777 per FEU.
The Drewry index, which analyses container freight rates on eight major routes to and from the US, Europe and Asia, is 82% higher than the same week last year. It is the highest since October 2022. Today, values are 166% higher than the pre-pandemic average.
Rotterdam – Shanghai rates were up 50%, to $975 per FEU, followed by Shanghai – Los Angeles rates , which increased by 38%, to $ 3860 per FEU.
Shanghai – New York freight rates rose by 35%, to $ 5644 per FEU, while Shanghai – Genoa rates were up 21%, to $6282 per FEU.
Shanghai – Rotterdam freight rates also increased, by 12%, to $4951 per FEU. Similarly, New York – Rotterdam rates rose by 2%, to $608 per FEU.
On the other hand, Los Angeles – Shanghai rates fell by 1% to $762 per FEU. Rates on the Rotterdam – New York route remained stable.
Drewry forecasts further increases over the next few weeks due to the Red Sea crisis.
