Alphaliner report

Suez Canal route suspended?

by Port News Editorial Staff

The Red Sea crisis has temporarily forced shipping companies to suspend transits from Suez for security reasons due to the Houthi-led attacks on merchant ships. However, the suspension has not affected all containerships equally.

While it is true that over the last twenty weeks not a single 18,000 TEU vessel has used the Canal that handles over 12% of global traffic, it is equally true that since April over 90 4,000 TEU boxships have been seen transiting there every month.

Before the crisis broke out, the number of monthly transits for these types of vessels was much lower. Alphaliner speaks of 60 transits per month.
