The port of La Spezia is in mourning following the tragic accident this morning at the Calata Artom quay. A port terminal car with two workers inside ended up in the sea for reasons that are still not clear. One of the workers managed to save himself. The driver of the car, however, Alessandro Basti, 60, was stuck inside and died.
“On behalf of the entire La Spezia port community and all my colleagues at the Eastern Ligurian Port Network Authority, I wish to express my immense grief and deepest sympathy to the family of the La Spezia Container Terminal employee, Alessandro Basti,” said the president of the Port Network Authority, Mario Sommariva.
“This is a time for grief and sorrow. Over the next few days, we must work to ensure that the level of attention on the issue of work safety is kept high and constant. I want to thank the fire service, the Harbour Master’s Office, and all the law enforcement agencies that promptly intervened at the scene of the accident,” he concluded.
